| This three-piece vocal group was formed initially in the early 40s in Chicago, Illinois, by three sisters, Delois (second soprano), Billie (contralto) and Rodessa (first soprano). In the early 40s, Delois, the eldest, joined the Roberta Martin Singers while still at Englewood High School and spent the next 18 years as a singer with them. During this time the sisters were not performing together. Billie studied voice training at the American Music Conservatory and Rodessa moved to Gary, Indiana, where she directed the choir at the Galileo Baptist Church. However, in 1962, the Barrett Sisters re-formed when Roberta Martin invited the trio to work with Fred Mendelsohn at Savoy Records. The Barrett Sisters have continued to be fixtures of the US gospel touring scene ever since. |
